While certain aspects of this phenomenon have been studied, a comprehensive analysis was lacking. This study uses the BALSAC population database to examine all Catholic marriages celebrated in Montreal between 1800 and 1940 where spouses had parents who had married elsewhere in Quebec. This approach makes it possible to measure the scale, pace and geographical distribution of interregional migration, to estimate the importance of family migration and to identify certain specific routes linking rural and urban parishes.

Manuel didactique et carte de visite : destins croisés du double Dictionnaire algonquin de Jean-Baptiste Thavenet

Lise Puyo and Fannie Dionne
In the early 19th century, Sulpician Jean-Baptiste Thavenet learned Anicinàbemowin at the Lac des Deux Montagnes mission near Montreal and compiled an Algonquin dictionary. Upon leaving for France in 1815, he left the dictionary behind, where it was copied by another Sulpician. The original then joined Thavenet in Rome, where the author used his knowledge to establish himself as the Roman authority on Anicinàbemowin and to influence the Pope in favour of the Sulpicians of Montreal. By analysing the dual use of the Algonquin Dictionary — as a teaching tool in the mission and as a political instrument in Rome — this article aims to broaden our understanding of the impact of the learning of Indigenous languages.

Note de recherche. Présentation d’une source : deux atermoiements et un meunier au tournant du 19e siècle

Christian Dessureault
An “Atermoiement” or assignment was an additional period granted by creditors to an insolvent debtor. Illustrating the historical value of this source, two notarized assignments from 1803 reveal the importance of the business activities of a Lower Canadian miller, Joseph Barbeau, at the beginning of the 19th century. Based on the information they contain, we can trace the economic activities of this artisan-entrepreneur in the construction, repair and operation of flour mills, as well as his involvement in the grain trade.

Anastakis, Dimitry, Elizabeth Kirkland et Don Nerbas (dir.).
